How to enter accurate numbers

  • Use current market value for property — PropTrack, CoreLogic or Domain estimates. Not the purchase price.
  • Enter superannuation at member balance — include all funds, not just your current one.
  • For SMSFs, use the member balance as one line. The look-through breakdown is separate.
  • Don't forget HECS/HELP — it's indexed, has no interest, but still subtracts from your wealth.
  • Offset balances count as cash, not against the mortgage. Otherwise you'll double-count.

Frequently asked questions

What is my net worth in Australia?

Your net worth is total assets minus total liabilities. For Australians the formula is: cash + super (APRA and SMSF) + property market value + shares & ETFs + crypto + other assets, minus mortgages + credit cards + HECS/HELP + personal loans + margin loans. The Auravest calculator above runs this calculation in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

What's a good net worth in Australia?

Per the ABS Survey of Income and Housing, the median Australian household net worth was approximately $579,200 (2019–20 reference period), with the mean at $1.04 million. The gap reflects a long tail at the top end. Net worth generally peaks in the 55-64 age bracket as mortgages are paid down and superannuation compounds. See our full guide for benchmarks and method.

Should I include my super in my net worth?

Yes. Superannuation is mandatory, illiquid until preservation age, but for most working-age Australians it is the second-largest line on the household balance sheet after the family home. Excluding it understates your wealth by 30–40%.

Does HECS/HELP debt count?

Yes. HECS/HELP is indexed annually, has no interest, and isn't on your credit file — but it is still a real liability and reduces your take-home pay through compulsory repayments. Include the current indexed balance.

Is the calculator free?

Yes — completely free and ungated. No signup required. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. We don't store any of the numbers you enter.
